M119.960 tall-deck
M119.97x/.98x short-deck
So in summing up the M119 variant engines it appears there was a difference in the blocks-
1st generation engines (91-92-93-94) are "closed deck" or dry wall "tall blocks"
2nd generation engines (95>) are "open deck" or wet wall "short blocks" to help solve the cooling issue problems in the first engines and reduce the weight of the block
All .960 blocks are closed-deck (90-92, R129 only).
Early .97x blocks are closed-deck, late .97x are open deck (92-95 W124/R129, 93-95 R129(. The change was early in 1994 USA model year.
All .98x blocks are open deck and are interchangeable with the late .97x open-deck blocks. Details in FSM here, the second link has block casting numbers:
Kaaned:
960 - tall deck head - not interchangeable with any other model - 38mm intake and double valve springs - heavier pistons 10.1 comp
971/975 - short deck heads (identical engines heads) - 11.1 comp - major changes to pistons -cams -valve train -cam timing
970/972/974 -short deck heads (assume identical engines) 10.1 comp - different pistons to as above -plus different cams/cam timing
980 - short deck heads - different engine specs (crank/rods etc) -10.1 comp - different pistons to above - different cams/cam timing - reduced inlet valves to 35mm - different design inlet manifold
Open deck engine produce less noise and run cooler as stated, quiet engine was needed for W140 luxury sedans, closed deck is stronger and more robust. E50/E60 with M119.985 AMG engine have 39mm intake valves, so they are 4!mm larger than standard M119.98x. .960 tallblock is good to build stroker since M117 5.6 crank fit directly and it is easy to maintain good rod ratio. Timing chain issues, I do not know if .960 is more robust with extra chain gear, but serpentine belt tensioner in .960 is the worst desingn. It is not easy to get "best parts" from each engine generation...

Kui mitu oled või on teinud su tutvusringkond? Et kõik m119 plokid pidid samad olema?
Aita siis teemaalgatajat....tundub iizi diil ja malciku hinnapakkumisi arvestades ka ideaalne hind...
Või siiski Päris AMG’ga pole reaalset kokkupuudet veel olnud...isekleebitud AMG märk Läti stangedega autol tundub kogemus olevat...vaata mõnda ehedat asja...see avardab päris palju silmaringi MB osas...
Ei maksnud AMG mudelid vaid kleepsu/märgi poolest pea poole rohkem...
Seepärast tuleb ka arvestada, AMG mootori eest küsitakse rohkem kui tavaseeria eest, mis on ka nõutud kaup praegusel ajal...miks...seda teavad need, kes on nõus nn üle mõistuse hinda maksma...
